It was to be used by team of trained volunteers as a base from which to collect important atmospheric and meteorological data after the detonation of a nuclear device on British soil. In the event of such an attack, observers would monitor the intensity of the bomb blast, wind (and therefore fallout) direction and atmospheric conditions then communicate these data to group headquarters at Carmarthen. In addition, the observers would be responsible for informing and warning the local populace of any immediate danger.

After the fall of the Soviet Regime in Russia, the threat of nuclear strike was considered minimal, and accordingly, the bunker was decommissioned in September 1991 after thirty-two years of service, during which it was maintained on constant standby. Eighteen years later, the bunker is in a poor state. Although it has escaped flooding, it has been heavily looted and graffitoed: Local youths have pressed it into service as a drug den and given it an ambitious make-over with paint and handprints. Although some vestiges of the original fittings and furniture remain amongst the debris of the floor, the most striking features of this space are modern. As such, it is in some ways more valuable as a cultural artifact of the last ten years and post-Cold War culture than as a place of Cold War historical value.

Left to Right: Ventillation pillar with filter louvre detached and lying on the ground; Fixed Survey Meter pipe and Bomb Power Indicator probe; Hatch cover.

Left to Right: Descent, Looking back up the shaft, Elsan Closet in the alcove.

Left to Right: Hand pump used for drainage, Looking back to the shaft from the monitoring room, The monitoring room, A collection of items on the floor including siren box and mattress.

Left to Right: "Sex 'n' drugs 'n' rock 'n' rave", Instrument array mount: Hitler and handprints, Instrument shelf with saucepan.

Left to Right: British Telecom equipment: WB 1401 Reciever Speech and WB 1400 Filter Unit, Detail of Filter Unit, Fire blanket housing.

The atmosphere of the bunker was somewhat damp and more than a little unpleasant. The walls were covered in graffiti and paint and the floor was covered in rubbish, broken furniture and electronics, as well as several part-mummified birds which had flown down the ventillation shaft and died of starvation. Scraps of documents remained, including one printed with the words 'On Her Majesty's Service' and the telecomms. panel remained intact on the floor, but otherwise, there was little of the original equipment remaining.

SEE ALSO: HORSHAM U.K.W.M.O.

Home..

Derelict Miscellany.
